Hylenex® is an injectable enzyme (hyaluronidase) designed to break down hyaluronic acid, the key component in many dermal fillers. This treatment is commonly used to correct overfilled areas, address uneven filler placement, or dissolve unwanted results from hyaluronic acid-based fillers like Juvederm®, Restylane®, or Belotero®. Hylenex® can also be used in emergency cases, such as vascular occlusions, to restore blood flow and prevent complications.
A typical Hylenex® injection session lasts about 15-30 minutes, depending on the areas being treated, the amount of filler to be dissolved, and the complexity of the procedure. The process involves carefully injecting Hylenex®, an enzyme-based solution, into the targeted areas to break down hyaluronic acid fillers. Patients usually experience minimal discomfort during the session as most providers use fine needles and can apply a topical numbing cream if needed.
Individuals who have received hyaluronic acid-based fillers and wish to adjust or remove them due to overcorrection, asymmetry, lumps, or other concerns may be good candidates for Hylenex®. A consultation with a specialist is essential to identify suitability.
Hylenex® begins to work quickly, with noticeable results often visible within minutes to hours after the injection. The enzyme in Hylenex® breaks down hyaluronic acid-based fillers by increasing tissue permeability, allowing the body to absorb the material efficiently. Full effects are typically observed within 24 to 48 hours, although the timeline can vary depending on the amount and type of filler being dissolved. For larger volumes or denser fillers, complete resolution may take slightly longer. Follow-up appointments may be advised to assess the results and identify if additional treatment is necessary.
The action of Hylenex® is temporary. It breaks down hyaluronic acid fillers. Once the filler is dissolved, the treated area returns to its pre-filler state. If desired, the new filler can be administered after an appropriate interval.
Common side effects may involve redness, swelling, or irritation at the injection area, which typically subsides within a few days. Severe allergic reactions are rare but can occur. It’s important to discuss any allergies or medical conditions with your provider before treatment.
